What Would You Call the First City on the Moon?
Imagine looking up at Earth from another world.
One day, the night sky may look very different for people living on the Moon. Instead of looking at the Moon from Earth, future lunar residents could look across a vast, silent landscape and see our blue planet shining in the darkness.
Imagine a futuristic lunar settlement beneath enormous protective structures, glowing with lights against the blackness of space. Around it would stretch endless craters, mountains and dusty plains — a landscape unlike anything on Earth.
It sounds like science fiction.
But NASA is already working toward a long-term human presence on the Moon.
NASA Is Planning a Moon Base
NASA's current Moon Base plans focus on the lunar South Pole, a region considered important because of its scientific value and potential access to resources such as water ice.
The agency describes its Moon Base as humanity's first lunar outpost, where astronauts could eventually live, work and explore for extended periods. NASA plans to develop it gradually through robotic missions, infrastructure and increasingly complex human missions.
Recent NASA research is also examining lunar resources, natural shelters and environmental hazards — all important steps toward making long-term life on the Moon possible.
What Could a Lunar City Look Like?
The first settlement probably wouldn't look like a giant Earth-style city.
Instead, it could begin with a small collection of habitats, laboratories, power systems, communication equipment, landing areas and robotic vehicles.
Over time, those facilities could expand.
Future lunar homes might be protected from radiation and micrometeorites by thick shielding or layers of lunar soil. Robots could help construct roads and landing areas, while advanced systems could extract and process local resources.
Eventually, what begins as a scientific outpost could grow into something much larger.
Perhaps even a city.
A City Under the Stars
Picture walking through a protected lunar habitat and looking through a huge window.
Outside, the landscape is completely silent.
There are no trees.
No oceans.
No clouds.
No birds.
Only mountains, craters and the distant Earth.
Inside the settlement, however, there could be farms, research laboratories, homes, medical facilities, schools and communication centers.
The Moon could become humanity's first permanent home beyond Earth.
Why the Lunar South Pole?
The lunar South Pole is especially interesting because its unusual lighting and shadow conditions may provide opportunities for power generation and access to resources.
At the same time, it is an extremely difficult place to live. NASA notes that the region has rugged terrain, abrasive lunar dust, extreme temperatures and permanently shadowed areas that can become extraordinarily cold.
That means building a city there would require technologies far beyond those used in ordinary construction on Earth.
The Beginning of a New Era
NASA's Moon Base isn't simply about building houses on another world.
The goal is to learn how humans can survive, work and conduct science in a completely different environment.
Those lessons could eventually help humanity travel farther into the solar system, including future missions to Mars.
The first lunar settlement could therefore become more than a destination.
It could become the beginning of a new chapter in human history.
So, What Should We Call It?
If humans eventually build a true city on the Moon, what should its name be?
Here are a few possibilities:
- Luna City
- Artemis City
- Moonhaven
- Selene
- Lunar Prime
- New Horizon
- Tranquility City
- Lunaris
- Apollo City
- Earthlight
Maybe the name will come from a scientist, astronaut, explorer or even the people who become the Moon's first permanent residents.
One thing is certain: the first lunar city would represent something extraordinary.
For the first time, humans would have a permanent community on another world.
Would you leave Earth to live on the Moon?
And most importantly…
