Diamond-Rich Botswana Declares National Public Health Emergency

What Happened

On August 29, 2025, President Duma Boko declared a national public health emergency after Botswana’s medical supply chain collapsed. Hospitals and clinics across the country are running out of essential medicines and equipment.

Why the Emergency?

  • Medicine shortages: Critical drugs for HIV, TB, diabetes, asthma, cancer, and mental health are scarce. Non-urgent surgeries have been suspended.
  • Diamond dependency: Botswana relies on diamonds for up to 80% of exports and a large share of government revenue. A prolonged slump in the global diamond market has cut into healthcare funding.
  • Cuts in foreign aid: Reduced U.S. support for HIV/AIDS programs has left the health system even more vulnerable.
  • Procurement failures: The Central Medical Stores has been accused of corruption, overpricing, and inefficiency. A recent discrepancy showed inflated estimates of 705 million pula versus an independent assessment of 80 million pula for needed supplies.

Government Response

  • Emergency fund: The government released 250 million pula (around $17–18 million) for urgent medicine procurement.
  • Military logistics: The army will handle distribution of medical supplies to ensure they reach hospitals quickly.

Bigger Picture

  • President Boko came to power less than a year ago, ending six decades of single-party dominance. He campaigned on economic diversification, warning against over-reliance on diamonds.
  • This crisis is seen as a major test for his government, balancing urgent health needs with long-term reforms.
